Your input, please!

Hello ladies. As I mentioned, I'm working on a quilt for myself. I finished the squares and have two questions for you guys. Firstly, do I arrange them organized by color (first photo), or randomly (second photo), or organize them in another way? I used most of my fabrics in my cabinet, so they are totally varied.
Secondly, this is for our queen bed. The quilt is meant for a full. I was thinking of finishing the top the way it is meant to be (I'll add white rectangles on the sides to even the edges), and then I was going to add larger white rectangles to make it large enough. The crosses will pretty much be only on the top of the bed, and the white part will be hanging off the sides. Otherwise, I could make more crosses and have the entire quilt be crosses.... Help!

  1. I like the varied placement! I am not sure about whether to add more squares or leave the sides white...hmmm....have you tried laying a large piece of white fabric down one side to give you an idea of the borders? Good luck!

  2. Hi Amy, I like that each row is staggered, this will add an interesting effect. If you add the white rectangles to even up each side, those pieces will be quilted and have a texture all of their own. I don't think you need to make any more blocks. Are you going to hand quilt this one too? Looking forward to seeing the end result! If you used up all of the fabric in your stash, you will have fun shopping for some new fabrics now! :-)

  3. Hi Amy,
Yes I like the random colour placement too. I think it is more fun. Perhaps there is just not enough colour saturation in the gradational arrangement - other quilts and crocheted rugs made that way look excellent when the colour is full on (check out purl bee's "Whit's Knits: Bear's Rainbow Blanket" for Nov 15 2012).
I too am not sure about whether to whip up more crosses or not. I like Amy's large piece of fabric test suggestion. It might look marvellous when you walk into the room and see the coloured crosses from the side. More work I know, but potential wow factor might boost your enthusiasm.

  5. And... (there is always more)....
I've been thinking about your edging issue Amy. And all I can come up with is to ask whether you like the look of "framed" quilt tops or ones that just have a small edging? Some quilts seem to have a frame within a frame kind of arrangement (does that make sense?).
But you know, as I look again at your photos, I personally really like thinking that that is more or less the quilt top as is. So possibly that means I'm tending towards the keep on making crosses idea!

  6. Amy, I love this quilt pattern. My vote is for the random arrangement. I would also say that you are finished. Add the rectangles on the edges and you will have a lovely white and coloured quilt top.I l like how the squares are off set from each other. Did you sand on a chair to take the photo. I always find it helpful to get a birds eye view when putting a quilt top together. And I also squint my eyes to check for colour balance (you might already do both!). Happy putting together. I logged onto this site this morning to post a similar question. Looking for your advice too. Cheers!!!

  7. My vote is also for the random arrangement! For certain...and I love a white border because it makes the top stand out...and then you can make it as big or small as you like.. Really love this photo!!!!! So excited to see the 'swiss cross' quilt come to fruition (this is the one, yes?)

  9. Hi everyone, It's been great reading all of your comments and learning a few tips here and there. I love this part of the quilt making process via our blog. Amy, I probably don't need to add anything, but would say I too love the random colour placement. I have always admired this quilt pattern. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.
