Amy (Canada) Blocks for Stephanie!

I love this pattern! It was a great use for the rest of my strips from my spider web squares. I was even able to use some scraps other people sent me, do you see them there?! There were a couple of things I wanted to share with you guys. First off, Stephanie, I couldn't find the seam allowance, but assumed it was 1/4". This only matters on either side of the white strip. I hope that is correct. Another thing I wanted to tell you is that if you use 1/4" seam allowance, you'll want to cut your strips much thicker than you think. Mine were way to thin and I had to use some thicker ones. Lastly, I found that because you are cutting the edges off, your seams are not backstitched and when you rip the paper off, your seams are pulled apart. I don't know how to fix this. I actually left some of my paper on because of this. Any ideas of how to prevent this? Otherwise,  a beautiful square! Love it!

  3. Gorgeously bright block Amy. Thanks for the tips re finishing. Gosh, I don't have any clue as to how to prevent the seams unravelling when you start removing the paper backing.

  4. I'm still confused why we need paper for these blocks? Could we not use a white square and build out from either side of the center 'strip' like we did for the spider web blocks? Then you wouldn't damage your seams from ripping off the paper either...though I suppose you could prevent that by using a smaller stitch? I will start mine this weekend... anyone else think the paper is unnecessary?

  5. I think it is best to leave the paper on, and then remove it after the blocks are sewn together. That is what I have done in the past, because you will have seams coming undone as Amy realized if you remove paper first. More work for Stephanie, though, so I guess the call is her's to make.

  6. This is Stephanie. I always sew a around the edge of the block before I tear the paper off. I took a class on paper piecing once and that is what they had us do. You can leave the paper on if you want. I am pretty easy!
