Decisions decisions

I have finally completed a few extra of my scrappy log cabins from last year and have enough to make a reasonable sized quilt.  Thankyou to everyone that made me a block, I love them all and they really look excellent together.  The variations in grey blues and off whites are just what I was hoping for - some are darker and moodier, others greener and more tropical, and they look marvellous all mixed up.  The variations in the contrast off-whites are delightful too.

I thought I'd post a couple of pics before I start the major job of sewing up my first ever quilt.  I have been experimenting with layouts and here are the final two arrangements as agreed on by Miss 9, Miss 11 and myself.  M wouldn't be drawn.  My original plan has always been the second arrangement, but I am dithering about the first.  What do you think?

Thankyou also to those who generously shared extra strips of fabric.  I did find them useful.

  1. Wonderful! My vote is for the second arrangement as well (your original plan). Thanks for sharing!

  2. I love the second arrangement too Anthea! It is GORGEOUS! And...it is a perfect design for this group - the variety of colours and textures plays to the depth of the quilt, and makes it a real piece of art. Really beautiful. I can't wait to see it all together :)

    1. Thank you Katy and Jennifer for your thoughts. I think I am still favouring the second version too - but then I read Linsay's comments below and am looking at things in a different way.

  3. Anthea, those blocks look lovely all together. The mood is very peaceful and relaxed. I prefer the first arrangement. I think I like all the blocks shown in their individual glory, in the second arrangement the blocks are combined into six huge blocks (which may give more drama to the quilt). Both arrangements are great.

    1. You're on to something there Linsay. I hadn't thought of it that way, but perhaps that is why I am keeping the first version on the table. The impact of the second version isn't quite as dramatic in reality - I think the variations in the off whites help limit the stark contract between the blues & pale side of each log cabin (am I making sense?).

  4. I thought of it the same way as Linsay. I guess it depends on if you want the blocks to stand out individually, or as a group. I love both combinations! xx
